Segovia and Back

Add caption

Another very chilly start to the day, though it did finally warm up. We picked up our Fiat 500 rental cars from the airport - was a bit like the Italian job.  Thank goodness for GPS, don't think we would ever have found our way back to return the cars.  As it was, we took a wrong turning into the rental returns and the local Poliza came to our rescue.  They blocked off the road with their motorbikes so that we could reverse down the road and into the correct entry - a genuine Police escort!
Segovia is about 100 km from Madrid and we drove there on the most amazing toll road - no roadworks or potholes and worth the $9.00 toll.
Segovia has an amazing aqueduct that goes through the middle of the old town.  It has parts of it have been restored, but still an amazing piece of Roman architecture.  We also visited the La Vera Cruz Church, which has 12 sides.  We weren't able to go inside as it was closed in the afternoons, but still very cute.
The castle Alcazar supposedly inspired Walt Disney's Fantasyland castle - it was pretty amazing. Even the walk up to the castle was a treat, with violets growing wild alongside the path.
Once back in Madrid, we had a delicious pizza and pasta meal.  The other local experience was to try chocolate con churros - thick, rich chocolate drink that you dip churros into.  Think that's a once in a life time experience!
