A mostly clear day and pick and mix....

The intention was to get on the road early this morning, to avoid the first tour buses.  Due to the fact that we kept waking up during the night to check to see if the aurora had made an appearance, that really didn't happen.  The weather was brighter this morning, with sunshine and only a light breeze, such a nice change from the howling gale yesterday.
We decided to return to Reynisfjara Beach to see if we could get some photos of the basalt rock formations, without people climbing all over them.  The light wasn't great, but it was so nice to be there without masses of tourists.  A truely stunning part of at the coast.
Driving further along the coast we visited Kvernufoss waterfall, less well known and therefore less busy.  We were able to walk around the back of the waterfall and experience it from a different perspective.  Still hard to imagine how much ice must form around the falls during winter, as there is still plenty even though it is Spring.
Stopped to look at some old traditional, grass roofed stone cottages that are dotted across the countryside.  They are interesting as they are dug into the ground and then have soil and grass built up the side and roof, for insulation.  Many of them are being protected and restored.
Next stop was Gluggafoss falls that were formed by the water wearing away the different rock types, at different rates.  It has created a rock 'wall' in front of the falls, s with large holes for the water to flow through at different heights.  With the sun shining on the spray, it formed a stunning rainbow.
We then joined one of the best known tourist routes, the Golden Circle, so that we could see the Gullfoss, a huge waterfall, but very busy.  Also visited a geothermal area and saw a Geyser that erupted about every five minutes or so.  It was quite spectacular watching the water form a large perfect bow, before shooting skyward.  Interestingly the sulpher smell was only subtle, not nearly as strong as Rotorua.
On our way to Reykjavik we drove through the Thingvellir National Park.  More stunning scenery and an amazing road that climbed up through interesting rock formations and fascinating moss covered rocks.
Found our way to our AirBnB, in the centre of the city.  Even in the short time we have been here, we are already loving this place.  We treated ourselves to dinner from the Reykavik chip shop - they were delicious too.   And then there was the 50% off pick and mix that we heard about......

Looking forward to exploring more tomorrow.
