Once we settled in for the night in Reykjavik we thought it appropriate to watch the movie Eurovision, on Netflix. Bit of nonsense, but interesting to see some of the sights that we had visited recently. Yesterday was our city day and our Air BnB was perfectly located for exploring without having to drive. Sadly the miserable weather theme continued, but we were still able to make the most of it.
Early morning walk to get coffee and hot chocolate (with cream on the top) and then the most delicious cinnamon buns freshly baked - the best ever. Visited the impressive cathedral that overlooks the city. The architecture is very contemporary and minimalist, but has still created a feeling of peace and serenity. While we were there we were fortunate enough to hear the organist practicing and the pipe organ was truly impressive.
The houses are mainly plaster or corrugated iron and are painted in quirky and interesting colour combinations and designs. That, along with the wall art are make walking the streets an adventure, waiting to see what is around the next corner. Even some of the roads are painted - a rainbow, an extra long hopscotch and a sprint track. Lots of contrast between traditional and ultra modern buildings. It's easy to see how lovely it would be on a warm sunny day, with plenty of different outdoor eating options available.
We identified a couple of options for possible aurora hunting, away from the lights of Reykjavik, just in case the cloud cleared. Went for a drive to check them out, but sadly, the weather was just not kind to us. We will have to wait for Ella to send us photos the next time she visits.
Late afternoon David dropped us off at the Sky Lagoon - hot pools built along the edge of the harbour and looking out to sea. Even though it was cold and drizzly, it was absolutely devine soaking in the warm water with the steam swirling around us - talk about relaxing.
Went for our last evening stroll up the hill to the cathedral to see it lit up and then wandered back to get packed for an early morning departure. Made it safely to return the rental car, check in and board our plane for London. Bit of a delay while they de-iced the wings! Considering the strong winds, we had a remarkably smooth flight out and are cruising above the cloud, London bound, as I write this.
Iceland is a beautiful country and worth visiting, especially if you can get off the beaten track. It appears to be a country of very little waste and forward thinking in regard to limiting pollution. It does have the feel of minimalism, where time is spent on doing what is important rather than for show. Not sure if it was the time or year, but we didn't see any gardens and the only ornamental plants were a few crocuses poking through and two hanging baskets with miniature daffodils flowering. Have to say that they do make good liquorice (and pick and mix)!
