We hired bicycles for two hours and cycled across the Golden Gate Bridge. Apart from the lycra clad locals going extremely fast on the cycle trail, it was such a buzz. The view was amazing and anyway, we were on the Golden Gate Bridge! We had the option to catch a ferry back, but decided to cycle back across. As we were on the move early, it was relatively uncrowded, but on the return trip the cycle paths were incredibly busy. For those of you who have heard me grumble about tourists in rental cars, in Central Otago, tourists on bicycles are just about as bad.
Bought some snacks and cold drinks from a supermarket and sat in the 'meadow' overlooking the bridge and harbour. Not a bad view at all.
Back to the hotel and we decided that the top of Lombard Street was within walking distance so puffed our way up the hill to the iconic zig zag on the other side. It was amazing to see in real live after having featured so much in movies. Can't imagine what it would be like to live there as there was a constant stream of cars and people weaving their way down.
We went back down to the waterfront and Pier 39. What an amazing place, lots of street stalls and boutique stores. One of the significant things we noticed was the absolute absence of hawkers, a very pleasant change from many tourist spots. We saw the sea lions sunning themselves on the pontoons which were captivating to watch. There were lots of buskers and street performers as well which all added to the atmosphere of the waterfront.
Tonight we went to Bobo's Burgers for dinner, across the road from the hotel. Apart from the fact that it was close, it was a delightful blend of Italy and America with a spectacular light fixture made from red Venetian glass. Food was delicious and the staff were very interested in the fact that we had come all the way from New Zealand.
Decided that we weren't quite ready for the day to end so walked back down to the waterfront and went to Ghirardelli's chocolates and ice cream. David and I shared a decadent drinking chocolate made with milk and melted dark chocolate. It made the walk back up the hill to the hotel much easier and the end of a fantastic day.

Loving all the photos, Dave, some of those places you went were especially spectacular. We loved San Francisco when we were there all those years ago. xxx
