San Francisco Day 3

Today started out clear again, but soon cloud and mist rolled in and the temperatures was definitely on the chilly side.  Our plan had been to go to Muir Wood, north of the city but, due to the Federal Budget crisis that has yet to be resolved, the National Park, along with a number of other places, was closed.  As an alternative, we headed North to Armstrong Wood, a smaller Redwood National Park.  On the way we drove down the zig zag on Lombard Street which was very cool.  It was so nice to leave the city and drive through more rural areas, including the wine-growing near Napa Valley.  Armstrong Wood was relatively small, but the trees were incredible, particularly when you realise that some of them are 1400 years old.  The park wasn't too busy as we were there early, but was certainly starting to fill up by the time we left.
On the way back we drove through Sausalito, a smaller 'village' on the northern coast, below the bridge.  It reminded us of Devonport on Auckland's North Shore, very quaint with lots of boutique stores.  It is a popular spot to cycle to and then catch the ferry back to the city.
Our plan this afternoon was to go to Alcatraz but, thanks to the Federal Budget situation, that was closed for tours as well.  As we had the time, we drove to Alamo Square - a small park and dog playground, but surrounded by the most amazing houses.  There are a row of wooden, four storied houses beautifully painted in a range of colours, known as the Painted Ladies.  Apparently it is the most photographed street in San Francisco.  They were certainly beautiful but the other buildings in the area are equally stunning.  We have absolutely loved the variety and detail of the buildings in the parts of the city we have visited.
After dropping the car back to he hotel, it was down to the waterfront for a very late lunch - Subway and donuts!
Craig and Annette were due to pick up their car today so we navigated our way back to t
he airport area without too many problems and now are now ready to set off on our next adventure.  Tonight we walked across the road to Bobo's Burger Bar again and had divine pizza, beer and bubbles.  It was crowded so clearly popular with the locals and it was easy to see why.
Ironic that we were concerned about the winter weather and how that would impact on our being about to visit the National Parks and it looks like it is going to be the Government's disfunction that causes the most problems!
